The two pieces I created for this exhibit are heavily inspired by the conflicts in Syria, Europe, and Lebanon. I've been touched deeply by the suffering of innocent people there, and as a Catholic I take ownership of their persecution and the destruction of innocence, as I would most likely be cut down for what I believe if I lived anywhere else. The endangered rhino, "The Persecuted", is a response to the rarity of pureness and trust found within children, yet they are being cut down for something as silly as differing beliefs or bloodline, such as the rhino is for his horns. The horned queen, "The Burdened", is a response to the burdens the more fortunate officials face in dealing with these situations. In essence, saying that their throne and responsibilities do not allow for an easier life. The decisions to protect your own people or to harbor the influx of helpless people is not an easy one.
Having quite some knowledge of the saints, I understand all these situations to be grounds for sainthood - as they each fought against differing evils and came from many walks of life. This is why they are gilded, ornate, and adorned - as an homage to religious imagery.
